Vanderburgh County Health Department Offers Food As Medicine

Thanks to funding provided by the Indiana Department of Health, the Vanderburgh County Health Department has implemented a brand new Produce Rx program.  In recent years, VCHD has offered their evidence based Pre Diabetes Prevention Program.  This program provides education on healthy eating and physical activity.  They are tracking biometrics such as BMI and hemoglobin A1C’s.  The program duration is one year.

Thanks to a collaboration between VCHD, Purdue Extension Nutrition Education Program and Urban Seeds participants of this program that meet the criteria of experiencing food insecurity can now receive $20 worth of fruits and vegetables every other week. Nourish, a community food buying club, operated by Urban Seeds, will help assist this program by providing the produce. Initial reporting has shown that 88% of participants have lost weight and 50% have lowered their A1C’s!  As the program gets off the ground, we are hopeful and excited for the impact this collaboration provides our community.
