LINCOLN ELEMENTARY RECEIVES
TRAINING ON “DYNAMIC PLAY”

With limited time for kids to be active during the school day, ensuring kids are getting the most out of their recess is very important.  This November, Lincoln Elementary teachers participated in a two day Recess Implementation training put on by PlayworksPlayworks is an organization based in Oakland, California that specializes in active play for kids.  Not all recesses are created equal. With this training, Lincoln hopes to provide physical activity time that is engaging and inclusive for all students.  Teachers are also given instruction on how to provide students with solutions for conflict resolution as well as how to create a positive culture around play.  Through the training, Lincoln will also be provided with play equipment to compliment some of the new games teachers will offer their students.  The Healthy Communities Partnership was able to cover a portion of the cost of the training and as interested in holding more trainings with Playworks in the future.  If your school or organization would be interested in a Playworks training please contact us through the “Get Involved” tab on our home page.

HCP ENLISTS NATIONAL ORGANIZATION TO CREATE DYNAMIC PLAY

One of the Healthy Communities Partnership’s early successes showcased a great partnership between funders, HCP, and multiple after school community centers. In January of 2017 HCP was able to provide training to Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation employees as well as multiple after school community centers that focused on how to make play time for youth more engaging and inclusive. Playworks, an organization that provides support and training to schools across the country, provided an extensive three day training in Evansville. Funding provided by the Indiana State Department of Health made this training possible. To make this training even more impactful, CareSource provided funding to purchase play equipment for the Dream Center and the YMCA Caldwell Community Center. The Access to Physical Activity Workgroup hopes to continue their success and partnerships further and continue to increase the number of youth participating in dynamic physical activity.

FOOD BUYING CLUB

In March of 2020, the Healthy Communities Partnership, with lead partner Urban Seeds, launched Nourish.  Nourish is a community food buying club that offers participants convenient online grocery shopping at prices up to 40% lower than big box stores.  In addition to this, Nourish also offers customized education for members such as, shopping on a budget, meal planning, basic nutrition, and cooking skills.  While Covid-19 has forced Nourish to adapt, the program is still operating and is currently in the process of adding new members.  What makes Nourish such an exciting program is that it addresses many of the challenges people face in eating nutritious foods. price, convenience, and lack of familiarity.  For more information on Nourish, visit www.urbanseeds.org

Funding for Nourish was provided by a grant from the Welborn Baptist Foundation.

HOURS A DAY

Children aged 5 to 16 spend an average of six and a half hours a day in front of a screen, and most of the screen time occasions the child is being sedentary and not living an active lifestyle. We want to change that in our community by creating equitable opportunities for healthy eating and active living where people live, learn, work, play and pray.
